what do you need to read before oathbringer

Alarm: reading this review WILL spoil you for prior events. I suggest checking out my thoughts on Stormlight & Sanderson's works first! Otherwise, please note that Oathbringer is book 3 in the Stormlight Archive, so if yous're reading further, spoilers for the series will be on you. (This review will non comprise Oathbringer spoilers.)

Synopsis

In Oathbringer, the third volume of the New York Times bestselling Stormlight Annal, humanity faces a new Pathos with the render of the Voidbringers, a foe with numbers every bit groovy as their thirst for vengeance.

Dalinar Kholin's Alethi armies won a fleeting victory at a terrible price: The enemy Parshendi summoned the tearing Everstorm, which now sweeps the world with destruction, and in its passing awakens the once peaceful and subservient parshmen to the horror of their millennia-long enslavement by humans. While on a drastic flight to warn his family of the threat, Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with the fact that the newly kindled anger of the parshmen may exist wholly justified.

Nestled in the mountains high above the storms, in the tower metropolis of Urithiru, Shallan Davar investigates the wonders of the ancient stronghold of the Knights Radiant and unearths dark secrets lurking in its depths. And Dalinar realizes that his holy mission to unite his homeland of Alethkar was as well narrow in scope. Unless all the nations of Roshar tin can put bated Dalinar's claret-soaked by and stand up together―and unless Dalinar himself can confront that by―even the restoration of the Knights Radiant volition not preclude the end of civilization.

My thoughts

This book is delightfully fatty. It is a Feast FOR MY Mind and I couldn't Wait to dive into information technology and be with my faves once more: Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Jasnah. The fact that Jasnah is back, Adolin killed Sadeas..!My little centre wasthen excitedwhen it landed on my desk.

Brandon did not disappoint.

In the previous two books, Dalinar hadn't actually been my favourite. Not for whatever real reason, I just loved Shallan and Kaladinand so much. Learning Dalinar'due south past was gut-wrenching and I came to really admire and appreciate the man he'd get. He said control is important to him and he encarmine well ways it, holy moly. If I was in his place I'd exist sending Howlers to all the kingdoms that idea I were lying.I'd be a horrific purple; I'm better at reading fantasy than at living information technology, ha. That all said, he goes on a scrap of a bender afterwards recovering his memories gradually and OH Male child. The character arc and development for Dalinar is incredible. I just… tin't spoil yous so I'll sayinformation technology was bright, GO READ IT.The words "unite them" are a constant in his mind, simply they're just two words, easily misinterpreted, and he but tries his best but… politics aren't his strong adapt.

I'thousand certain y'all tin can imagine how well this all goes downwards for him.Soz Dalinar.

This third installment seemed dominated by a lot of talking. I hateful, there was some intense action scenes (KALADINNNNN!!!) but , most of the story consisted of planning, plotting, characterisation and where will they exist next?! I definitely loved the team coming together; I am so connected to these characters (particularly Kaladin, merely Adolin became my heart too inOathbringer which I didn't wait! There's an entire lovely, soft side to him that is brought out in his interactions with Shallan). We as well encounter a lot of Shallan, but she seemed more active in the prior book rather than this 1 which means more of Pattern! I love him. "NO MATING!" The humming, likewise. "Mmmmm. Good lie." My fave.

Brandon. Is known. For his endings. And GOODNESS ME, the catastrophestressed me OUT.Stressed every bit in "I-am-scared-for-all-my-faves" and everyone in general type of mode. The decision was dramatic, fast-paced, simply very grapheme-raw and my eye was in my MOUTH while I was listening and driving. I loved every second. Information technology reminded me why I love Brandon's books so much. All the intriguing build up, the particular, the grapheme barrack and forged pathways through pain and hell… all of them interweave. I was literally brimming with tears at one signal – non considering a scene was sad! – because the tone of information technology hit me just right. Brandon built information technology perfectly and it twanged my emotions.

GAH SO Good.

Information technology besides must exist said, but I would love a standing ovation on behalf of Brandon'due south world building. The religions, the magics, the layered histories, relics… not to mention the Cosmere theory. The Knights Radiant, the orders, the Omnipotent, the spren…! His writing is richer considering of it. I may or may non have been texting my boyfriend in all majuscule letters about certain parts of the story.I desire to be specific but will relieve yous from the spoilings.

You'll definitely do good from reading Warbreaker before picking Oathbringer up.I did information technology unintentionally but I'm super relieved I did; nix retracted from the story, only snide remarks and absurd footling mentions would've slid past had I not read Warbreaker first. Again, the characters were RICHER considering of it. AH! I have so much love for this series!!! And likewise, a novellaEdgedancer featuring Elevator will exist awesome (heh) to read earlier Oathbringer besides. I personally didn't, but I will very, very soon. With snacks, every bit Lift would approve.

The Stormlight Archive is easily one of my top favourite fantasy serial OF ALL Time. Sanderson's encephalon creates a masterpiece every book and Oathbringer was no different. Inever know where ANYONE is going to end up in Brandon'due south conclusions. You know when you can see a design to a story, predict an arc for a grapheme, and you can pinpoint their trajectory? Nope, not this book. The characters mesh in such a thoughtful, precise and seemingly random mode until a indicate connects and the clouds part in your encephalon and your mind goes: AAAAAAAAH.

I could easily rave about this book for thousands of words and virtually of them likely wouldn't make sense. Just know that the Stormlight Annal is brilliant, intricate, incredible and FUNNY. I laughed a HEAP at this volume, mostly at Pattern, permit's be honest. But besides at Shallan'southward barrack. Brandon nailed it in the world building, unveiling more of the Stormlight lore which I canneverget enough of! Oathbringer was the epic tertiary installment and I immediately finished it and craved more.

Answers. I demand answers.

I'd definitely recommend nifty openWarbreaker. A sure sword may make an appearance… Or only read/reread the Stormlight books. Either mode I'd commend you and nod at your choices. Stormlight has such broken, amazing characters, such detailed lore, politics, and ideals, and provokes such a sense of "what does that mean, what's happening next?" that I honestly couldn't stop myself from diving into it, specially at the end. I won't say more than because of spoilers, I don't desire to give hints, and so I'll merely leave it at this: I was incredibly satisfied with how everything (everyone) ended, even if my feelings were fraught. I don't think a Stormlight (or a Sanderson) volume will ever disappoint me.
