Only four remain in the hunt for gold in Japan
2 min read
The 2020 summer Olympics have finally arrived after being rescheduled in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The summer tournament is being held in Tokyo, Japan and groups have been drawn for Olympic soccer competitions. In Group G the United States women's national team started off with a shock defeat against old rivals Sweden before recovering against New Zealand. The side rounds out their tournament group stage against Australia.
The 2016 gold medalists, Germany, missed out on the Olympics after failing to qualify via their early 2019 World Cup exit. France were eliminated in 2019 World Cup quarterfinals and also missed the cut. Europe will be represented by the Netherlands, 2019 World Cup runner-ups, and Great Britain who both got off to solid starts, winning their opening matches.
For Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee has adjusted the rule to allow national teams 22 players on their squads for the Tokyo Olympics but will still be limited to 18-player team sheets (11 starters plus seven substitutes) on matchdays. Netherlands manager Sarina Wiegman made the initial push for expanded roster, working with FIFA for support to appeal to the IOC.
How will the newly expanded rosters impact the tournament going forward? Who will advance out of the group stages and ultimately win gold? We have all your viewing information right here, so make sure to keep checking back for all your schedule, results, and information needs.
